Starting my SMSTS course I thought I was in for a long hard going 5 days. Ian Norton from the start kept me on my toes and never stopped throughout the course. I never thought I’d ever say this about a training course but I looked forward to everyday with enthusiasm. After the five days had finished, I managed to pass with flying colours.

I recommend this course especially with Ian as he is one of the best lecturers I’ve ever had.

I have attended so many courses over-the last 31 years of my career & couldn’t remember what half of them were about (some being mandatory and some volunteered), but this week I must say, I wasn’t looking forward to being in a class room for 5 days of Health and Safety “SMSTS” training at all. Apart from attending the week with some great people, the trainer had to be one of the most energetic, motivated individuals I have ever had, his teaching technique made a potentially very long and dry subject actually fun, very interactive and motivating whilst instilling his knowledge into the class. I have worked closely with Ian for the past 12 months during my time with Interserve. I found Ian to be very approachable and readily available to assist and contribute with his extensive knowledge of construction health and safety.

The knowledge of Ian Norton was excellent, any question I had for him he was very helpful. I struggle with tests and focus, however Ian was great at keeping me in the lesson with questions whilst ensuring I keep engaged.

Knowledge of the Ian Norton - not "wishy washy" on any subject and delivered clear, patient and informative presentations. It was also upbeat and kept you engaged with question and answer sessions throughout the day. Whilst Ian said he had a lack of IT skills, there was a clear understanding of the Zoom virtual classroom even being put into separate meetings for assignments and the exam was very smooth.

I liked the way Ian assessed that learning was taking place by asking questions to each of us at the end of the stage as it ensured you listened intently as you didn't know what you might be asked. This helped information stick in the mind. I enjoyed Ian's Q&A sessions and how he would facilitate group discussion and sharing of insights, this was beneficial and interesting. All the information provided was practical and could be applied at work, but also made you think. I am glad we didn't just go through the CDM guidance document as that would have been dull. Ian is very friendly, knows his stuff and is an excellent trainer.
